Thierry Mugler Labels: History and How to Date Them

Thierry Mugler (1948 to 2022) launched his own label in the mid-1970s and became a leading designer of 1980s power dressing. Later clothing was made under licence and the line was revived in 2008, so a sculpted, strong-shouldered piece needs its label and line checked before it is called 1980s.
Company history
The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) records that Mugler designed for Andre Peters in London in 1968 and 1969, and was back in Paris by 1971 designing a line called Cafe de Paris. The Thierry Mugler label was launched in 1973 to 1974. He introduced a couture line in 1992 that ran until 2000, and sold his ready-to-wear division, after which clothing was made under licence. A short-lived diffusion line appeared in the mid-1990s. In 2008 the line was revived as Thierry Mugler Edition, thirty-five pieces from the archives updated by Rosemary Rodriguez.
Our 1980s hub names Mugler and Claude Montana as the leading designers of power dressing, and cites his 1984 pleated gold lamé dress and 1988 red power suit among his best-documented pieces.
