Coach began in 1941 as a family leather workshop in Manhattan and became famous for sturdy cowhide handbags. The bags designed by Bonnie Cashin from 1962 to 1974 are the most collected, and ownership changes in 1985 and later help place other vintage bags.
Company history
Wikipedia records that Coach was founded in 1941 in a loft on 34th Street in Manhattan, where six leather workers made wallets and billfolds. Miles and Lillian Cahn joined in 1946; Miles Cahn developed a process inspired by baseball-glove leather, and Lillian suggested adding women's handbags. The Cahns bought the company in 1961 and hired Bonnie Cashin, who designed for Coach from 1962 to 1974 and added side pockets, coin purses, brighter colours and the silver toggle. Coach opened its first own store on Madison Avenue in 1981 and the Cahns sold Coach Leatherware to Sara Lee in 1985.
