Vintage Hat and Handbag Values: Hermès, Chanel, Coach, Leiber and More

Vintage handbags span the widest price range in vintage fashion: most sell for $30 to $200, but a vintage Hermès Kelly typically brings a few thousand dollars at auction and a clean vintage Chanel flap more. Vintage hats are mostly modest, with typical women's hats and fedoras selling for about $30 to $150 at auction, and a few designer and Western hats well above that. All figures below are estimates as of 2026, drawn from the sold data and auction results listed at the end.
Quick answer
- Vintage Hermès Kelly: about $2,600 to $3,500 at recent auctions for ordinary vintage examples; pristine modern Kellys $14,000 to $33,000; exotic and diamond Kellys into six figures.
- Vintage Chanel classic flap: about $2,500 to $7,900 at auction; dealer guide $4,500 to $8,500 for a medium/large.
- Vintage Coach: most 1990s bags $50 to $150; Bonnie Cashin era pieces median about $400 on eBay.
- Judith Leiber: crystal minaudières about $135 to $835 at recent auctions; dealers claim much higher for rare designs.
- Mesh, Lucite, Bakelite and beaded bags: mostly $40 to $150; silver mesh and signed pieces more.
- Hats: Stetson median about $65 at auction (best Western hats several hundred); Lilly Daché and Schiaparelli hats mostly $45 to $230; caps $11 to $45 typical.

These category medians mix every model and condition, which is why the Chanel median sits far below a classic flap.
Hermès
Hermès is the strongest name in resale. Rebag's 2025 Clair report found Hermès bags retained an average 138 percent of retail value, with the Kelly Mini II at 282 percent. Vintage examples sell for less than current production:
| Kelly | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage Kelly 32 and 28 (leather or canvas, ordinary condition) | about $2,600 to $3,500 | Recent European auction results (Barnebys) |
| Pre-owned Kelly 25/28/32, excellent, complete set | $14,000 to $25,000 | Vintage Bag Value |
| Kelly 25/28, pristine | $28,000 to $33,000 | Vintage Bag Value |
| Pre-1990s Mini Kelly, excellent | some appraised over ¥3,000,000 | Ginza Xiaoma (Japan) |
Records: Sotheby's reports selling nearly $60 million of Kelly bags since 2021, with a Kelly 28 Himalaya with diamonds at $425,000 (2023). In July 2025 one of Jane Birkin's original Birkin bags sold for €8.6 million in Paris. These are not benchmarks for a family Kelly. Chanel
| Classic flap size | Lambskin | Caviar |
|---|---|---|
| Mini (rectangular) | $2,800 to $4,500 | $3,200 to $5,200 |
| Small | $3,500 to $5,500 | $4,000 to $6,500 |
| Medium/Large | $4,500 to $7,000 | $5,500 to $8,500 |
| Jumbo | $5,500 to $8,500 | $6,500 to $10,000 |
Those are Vintage Bag Value's 2026 dealer ranges. Recent auction results sit in the same territory: a vintage medium classic double flap sold for about $2,513 in the UK, and Timeless medium and jumbo double flaps for about $7,882 and $6,193 in Germany. A full set (box, dust bag, matching authenticity card) adds about $300 to $700. Part of the strength is retail inflation: the medium classic flap retailed for about $5,800 in the US in 2019 and $11,300 by August 2025. Authentication matters more here than anywhere; see designer label fakes.
Coach
| Coach bag | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bonnie Cashin era (1962 to 1974) | eBay median $402 (middle half $175 to $854), 124 sales, Jul to Oct 2026 | Underpriced |
| Cashin-era Courier ("Baby") | $300 to $900+ | Vintage Bag Value |
| Saddle Bag (1970s) | $150 to $500+; rare colours $1,000+ | Vintage Bag Value |
| Willis | eBay median $150 (middle half $125 to $200) | Underpriced |
| Dinky | eBay median $139 | Underpriced |
| Most 1990s bags | $50 to $150 | Vintage Bag Value |
Dry, sticky or cracked leather "can halve a value", and Vintage Bag Value warns that asking prices run 30 to 150 percent above actual sales. Search check sold prices for vintage coach bonnie cashin on eBay.
Other designer bags
| Bag | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Louis Vuitton Speedy 30, Monogram | $200 to $320 fair; $350 to $600 good; $650 to $1,000 excellent | Vintage Bag Value |
| Gucci Jackie (all eras) | middle half about $280 to $506 at auction (26 results) | Barnebys |
| Judith Leiber crystal minaudières and evening bags | about $135 to $835 at recent US auctions | Barnebys |
| Judith Leiber, dealer view | vintage crystal $3,000 to $15,000+; classic bags $500 to $2,500 | Sewelo magazine |
The Leiber gap is a real disagreement: regional auction results are a fraction of what collector guides quote. Rare animal and novelty minaudières in perfect condition sit at the top; ordinary evening bags at the bottom.
Mesh, Lucite, Bakelite and beaded bags
| Type | Recent auction results | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Whiting & Davis mesh | middle half about $40 to $97 (14 results) | |
| Silver mesh purses (hallmarked, early 1900s) | about $400 each (UK) | Precious metal sets the floor |

| Beaded and micro-beaded purses | mostly $20 to $75 at auction | A late-1800s micro-beaded purse sold for $722 despite condition issues (Valuable Antiques) |
| Enid Collins of Texas | about $175 to $190 for jewelled examples (two recent results); a 2007 eBay survey found most sold for under $50 | Pre-1970 bags signed "ec" are preferred over later Collins of Texas (Tandy) bags |

Women's designer and millinery hats
| Maker | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Lilly Daché (1930s to 1960s) | single hats about $20 to $110 at auction; lots of several hats to about $275 | Barnebys |
| Schiaparelli | about $45 to $230 per hat at auction; 1950s straw hat about $130; three late 1950s to 1960s hats about $284 | Barnebys |
| Mr. John | dealer asks $65 to $165; an appraiser valued one at $40 to $60 | Eureka, I Found It!; Elizabeth Appraisals |
| Cloche hats (all eras) | median about $45 at auction; a Chanel felt cloche about $542; a 1960s YSL velvet cloche about $163 | Barnebys |
The pattern in these results: even hats by famous milliners usually sell for tens of dollars to the low hundreds at auction. Couture-house hats (Chanel, YSL) and exceptional pieces sit above that.

Condition notes for bags and hats
- Leather: dry, sticky or cracked leather can halve the value of a vintage Coach bag; on Louis Vuitton, cracked, peeling or very dark vachetta takes $100 to $300 off.
- Completeness: original lock, keys, dust bag and box add about $100 to $200 to a Speedy; a full Chanel set adds $300 to $700.
- Condition grade: Vintage Bag Value's Speedy 30 ranges ($200 to $320 fair, $650 to $1,000 excellent) show how much grade alone moves a bag.
See condition grading for the full scale and store vintage clothing for keeping hats and bags in shape.
Where to sell
High-value bags (Hermès, Chanel, Leiber) sell best through specialist luxury resellers or auction houses, with authentication; see where to sell vintage and auction houses for costume. Everyday vintage bags and hats sell on eBay, Etsy and Poshmark. Check sold prices rather than asking prices before you list (pricing your vintage).
