The best place to sell vintage clothing depends on what the piece is and what it is worth. Everyday 1970s to 1990s wear sells fastest on the big resale apps, mid-value collector pieces do best on eBay or Etsy where buyers search by era and label, and genuinely rare or historic garments belong with a specialist costume auction house. Fees range from nothing at all for the seller (Vinted) to roughly a fifth of the sale price (Poshmark), so the channel you pick changes what you take home.
Quick answer
- Under about $50 and casual (tees, jeans, 1990s wear): Depop, Vinted or Poshmark, where young buyers browse by style.
- $50 to a few hundred dollars, collectible (labelled 1950s dresses, workwear, band tees): eBay or Etsy, where buyers search by era, brand and size.
- Designer labels with resale demand: eBay, The RealReal, or an auction house's handbag and accessories sale.
- Pre-1920 costume, couture, celebrity or museum-grade pieces: a specialist auction house such as Augusta Auctions (US) or Kerry Taylor Auctions (UK).
- Not sure what you have? Identify and value it before you list (see below).
First, know what you are selling
Channel choice follows value, and value follows identification. Before you pick a platform, date the piece from its label and construction (see dating by labels and dating by construction), confirm it is not a reproduction (spotting reproductions), and grade its condition honestly (condition grading). A 1950s dress with a known label and no damage is a different product from the same dress with underarm stains, and it belongs on a different channel.
Then check what comparable pieces have actually sold for, not what sellers are asking. Our guide to pricing your vintage walks through how to do that.
Platform comparison (fees as of October 2026)
Fees change often. The figures below come from each platform's own help or fee pages as checked in October 2026; confirm on the platform before you list.
| Channel | What the seller pays | Who buys there | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay (US) | Final value fee of 13.6% of the total sale (up to $7,500) plus $0.30 per order ($0.40 over $10); women's bags 15% up to $2,000, 9% above; 250 free listings a month | Collectors and dealers searching by brand, era, size | Collector pieces, workwear, band tees, designer, anything with a searchable label |
| Etsy | $0.20 listing fee plus 6.5% transaction fee on the sale, plus payment processing | Buyers looking for curated vintage; items sold as vintage must be at least 20 years old | Dresses, accessories, 1940s to 1990s womenswear |
| Depop (US) | No selling fee for US sellers since July 2024; a payment processing fee still applies | Younger, trend-led buyers | 1990s and Y2K, streetwear, casual pieces |
| Vinted | No selling fee; the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee and shipping | Bargain-minded buyers, strong in UK and Europe | Low to mid-value everyday vintage |
| Poshmark (US) | $2.95 flat on sales under $15; 20% on sales of $15 or more | Mainstream fashion buyers | Branded vintage in wearable sizes |
| The RealReal | Commission on each sale (rate depends on item and price); they photograph, price and ship | Luxury buyers | Designer labels with current resale demand |
| Local consignment or vintage shop | A split of the sale price, or a cash offer; terms vary by shop | Walk-in shoppers | Quick, hands-off selling of mid-value pieces |
| Specialist auction house | Seller's commission plus possible photography or insurance charges; buyers also pay a premium | Collectors, dealers, museums | Rare, early, couture or celebrity pieces |
Sold prices on eBay: vintage 1950s dress

eBay: the widest collector audience
eBay remains the default for vintage that has a searchable identity: a brand, a union label, an era, a specific model. Collectors run saved searches for things like "ILGWU label" or "1950s Levi's", so precise titles get found. Its biggest advantage for pricing is the sold-listings filter, which shows what pieces like yours actually fetched (try check sold prices for vintage 1950s dress on eBay to see how it works).
Fee detail worth knowing: for most clothing the final value fee is 13.6% of the total amount of the sale, including shipping and tax the buyer pays, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above that. Women's bags and handbags are charged 15% up to $2,000 and 9% above. If you ship internationally without using eBay International Shipping, an extra 1.65% international fee applies. Sellers outside the US have different fee tables.
Use eBay for: band tees, denim, workwear, menswear, designer accessories, anything a collector would search for by name. Auction format suits genuinely scarce pieces where you cannot find a price; fixed price with Best Offer suits everything else.
Etsy: curated vintage buyers
Etsy's vintage category has a rule that matters: items listed as vintage must be at least 20 years old. Buyers on Etsy tend to shop by look and era rather than by exact model number, so good photos on a form and descriptive, era-led titles ("1960s mod shift dress, wool, bust 36") matter more than on eBay.
Costs are a $0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee on the sale price (Etsy also takes 6.5% of the shipping charge), plus payment processing, which varies by country. Etsy also sells optional advertising.
Use Etsy for: dresses, blouses, lingerie, hats, handbags and accessories from the 1930s to the 1990s, and anything whose appeal is visual.
Depop, Vinted and Poshmark: fast, casual, wearable
These apps are built for wearable secondhand fashion. They reward quick listing, trend awareness and fair prices, not deep provenance.
- Depop removed selling fees for US sellers in July 2024, keeping a payment processing fee; buyers in the US and UK pay a marketplace fee at checkout. The audience skews young and style-driven, which makes it strong for 1990s, Y2K and streetwear.
- Vinted charges sellers nothing: "There are no selling fees on Vinted. You keep 100% of what you earn," in the platform's own words. Buyers pay a Buyer Protection fee when they use "Buy now" and cover shipping. Prices on Vinted run low, so it suits volume rather than rare pieces.
- Poshmark takes a flat $2.95 on sales under $15 and 20% on anything $15 or more. That is high for expensive items, but its mainstream audience moves branded, wearable vintage well.
None of these is the right home for a fragile 1910s silk gown or a rare collector piece; the buyers are not looking for it and the prices will not reflect it.
The RealReal and luxury consignment
The RealReal is a consignment platform for luxury goods: you send items, and they handle photography, pricing, customer service and shipping. You give up pricing control and pay a commission that depends on the item and its sale price. It makes sense for designer labels with steady resale demand (Chanel, Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and similar) when you would rather not list and authenticate pieces yourself. It is a poor fit for unbranded vintage, however old.
Local vintage shops and consignment
A local vintage dealer will either buy outright (expect a fraction of retail, since they carry the risk and the overhead) or consign and split the sale. Ask for terms in writing: the split, how long they hold an item, whether prices drop over time, and what happens to unsold pieces. This route is slower to pay but needs no photos, listings or shipping.
Specialist auction houses
For rare costume, an auction house puts the piece in front of collectors, dealers and museum buyers who will compete for it. Expect a seller's commission and possibly photography, insurance or lotting charges, and a wait of months between consignment and payment. Always ask for the full schedule of seller charges before you sign.
- Augusta Auctions (Vermont) describes itself as North America's premier auction house for historic costume, vintage fashion, accessories and rare textiles, and sells many museum deaccessions alongside private consignments. It generally looks for groups of 15 or more lots.
- Kerry Taylor Auctions (London) was founded in 2003 by a former Sotheby's specialist, holds about six sales a year including its "Passion for Fashion" auctions, and has sold dresses worn by Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn and others.
- Christie's runs handbags and accessories sales in Hong Kong, London, New York and Paris and offers free valuations; Doyle in New York holds regular Fine Jewelry and Luxury Handbags sales.

Before you list anywhere
- Photograph and measure the piece properly (see how to photograph and list).
- Clean only what is safe to clean (see cleaning vintage clothing); a bad wash can destroy value.
- Disclose every flaw with a photo. Honest condition notes reduce returns on every platform.
- Price from sold comparables, not asking prices.
