Most vintage jeans are worth $40 to $150, but the right pair can be worth several thousand dollars, and the difference is in small details: the red tab, the selvedge line in the cuff, the patch, the rivets and the size. As of 2026, worn American-made 501s from the 1980s and 1990s typically sell for about $35 to $150, redline selvedge pairs mostly for $200 to $1,000, and wearable big E pairs from the 1950s and 1960s for roughly $540 to $2,500. Pre-war pieces are priced one at a time and set the auction records.

Quick answer

  • Made in USA 501s (1970s to early 2000s, no selvedge): median about $55 worn; $299 to $899 if still deadstock with flasher tags.
  • Redline selvedge 501s (1971 to about 1983): median about $300, mostly $200 to $1,000.
  • Big E 501s (before 1971): median about $300 on eBay, with wearable 1960s pairs at $540 to $1,600 and hidden-rivet 1940s/50s pairs up to $2,500.
  • Levi's jackets: small e Type 3 about $50 to $300; big E Type 3 $150 to $2,000; Type 2 $800 to $1,500; Type 1 $2,000 to $8,000 worn.
  • Size moves this market hard: small waists (under about 30) sell for a fraction of 32 to 38 waists.
  • All figures are estimates drawn from 2026 sold data; your pair needs to be checked in hand.

The five details that set the price

Before comparing your pair to any table, check these, roughly in order of how much money they move. The full identification method is in our Levi's authentication guide and dating by labels guide.

  1. The red tab. A capital E ("LEVI'S") means before 1971; a lowercase e ("Levi's") means 1971 or later. This single letter is the largest value break in American denim.
  2. The selvedge line. Turn up the cuff. A clean woven edge with a red thread line along the outseam is "redline" selvedge, woven on narrow shuttle looms that Levi's used for 501 denim into the mid-1980s. A fuzzy overlocked edge means later wide-loom denim.
  3. Rivets and patch. Hidden rivets under the back pockets appear on pairs before 1966, when bar-tack stitching replaced them. A leather patch points to the 1950s or earlier; the card-like jacquard patch replaced it around the mid-1950s.
  4. The care tag. Care labelling became mandatory in the US in 1971, so jeans with no care tag at all are generally older. Later tags carry date digits (see care labels).
  5. Size and condition. A clean 34 waist with an even, earned fade sells for many times a small, heavily repaired pair of the same era. In 2026 eBay sales, two thrashed 28-inch big E pairs went for about $60 each while wearable 1960s pairs brought $540 to $1,600.

Levi's 501 values by era (2026 sold data)

Two independent 2026 readings of eBay sold listings line up well. California Vintage Buyers read completed sales from June to early September 2026; the reseller app Underpriced analysed eBay sales from July 6 to October 3, 2026, reporting medians and the middle half of prices. Underpriced's medians are lower because they include every condition and size, while the dealer ranges describe wearable pairs.

The records (outliers, not expectations)

The top of the market is pre-war, buckle-back Levi's found in mines and attics. A mine-recovered pair from the 1880s sold at auction for $87,400 in 2022, and a pair attributed to 1873 was reported to have changed hands for $100,000 in 2023. These are record prices for unique, historically important pieces. They pull the whole pre-war category up, but they say nothing about what a 1970s pair is worth. Even damaged pre-war Levi's are worth having examined, because so few survive that condition matters less than anywhere else in denim.

Levi's denim jacket values

The jacket a family finds in a closet is usually a post-1971 Type 3 trucker, which is a good wearable jacket rather than a collector piece. The earlier types are a different market entirely.

TypeYearsHow to spot itTypical range (2026)
Type 1 (506XX)to 1952One chest pocket, back cinch, front pleats$2,000 to $8,000 worn; exceptional early pieces $10,000 to $30,000+
Type 2 (507XX)1953 to 1962Two chest pockets, no cinch, side waist tabs$800 to $1,500; strongest observed listing $4,800
Type 3 (557XX), big E1962 to 1971Pointed flaps, V-stitching, capital E$150 to $2,000+ (eBay median $190, middle half $132 to $350)
Type 3, small e, Made in USA1971 onwardSame shape, lowercase e$50 to $300 (eBay median $75, middle half $61 to $125)

California Vintage Buyers reported paying $12,000 in cash for a 1940s Type 1 in strong condition in June 2026. That is the high end of a real transaction, not a typical value. One practical warning from the same source: Levi's own SecondHand trade-in programme paid at most $30 in Levi's gift card credit for a trucker jacket made more than twenty years ago (terms checked September 2026), whatever its age, so have an old jacket read before trading it in. Lee and Wrangler values

Lee and Wrangler sell for less than Levi's of the same era, but early pieces are real collector items. Lee was the zipper-fly pioneer (the 101Z added a zip in the 1920s), and its left-hand twill fades smoother than Levi's denim. For Wrangler, "Blue Bell" on the label marks the older, more valuable era.

Era and pieceTypical range (2026 dealer read)
1980s to 1990s Lee and Wrangler jeans and jackets$20 to $75
1980s to 1990s Wrangler, including most 13MWZ$15 to $50
1970s Lee Riders (worn)$30 to $100
1970s to 1980s Lee Storm Rider jackets$75 to $250
1960s to 1970s Wrangler with Blue Bell label$75 to $300
Blue Bell era Wrangler denim jackets$150 to $600
1950s to 1960s Lee 101-J and Storm Riders$200 to $600
1940s to 1950s Blue Bell Wrangler 11MW jeans$300 to $1,000 worn; $1,000+ deadstock with paper tags
1930s to 1940s Lee cowboy pants, hair-on-hide patch jacketsFour figures for the right piece

Storm Rider value depends heavily on the blanket lining and collar, which fail before the denim does.

Condition in denim: why worn is not bad

Denim is unusual: honest wear is part of what collectors pay for. Whiskers, honeycombs behind the knee and an even fade earned by real use add value. In 2026 eBay data, a distressed, fair-condition hidden-rivet 501XX in a 36 waist drew 47 bids and sold for $1,735, more than a smaller pair in better shape. What does destroy value:

  • Cutting the tags off deadstock. A 1980s or 1990s 501 with its flasher tags sold for $299 to $899 in 2026; the same pair worn is a $40 to $150 pair.
  • Hemming, cropping or modern repairs. Underpriced notes that the original hem and a clean crotch sell better than heavy repairs, and dealers say modern repairs and cut-out labels are what kill value.
  • Washing a dirty pair before sale. Leave it as found and let the buyer decide.

What does not carry a premium

  • Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC) reproductions. They copy old details, including big E tabs and selvedge, but are modern garments; check the care tag and the "Levi's Vintage Clothing" labelling. Cluzy's 2026 comps put a good LVC reissue around $220 on eBay.
  • Modern selvedge lines and reissues, which sell well below original redlines.
  • Levi's made outside the US after production moved offshore in the early 2000s, which are ordinary used jeans (median about $26 on eBay in 2026).

Where the money ends up

Big E, redline and early jackets are best sold where denim collectors look: eBay auctions with clear photos of the tab, cuff, patch, rivets and care tag, specialist dealers, or a vintage buyer who will read the pair in hand. Ordinary Made in USA 501s sell steadily in larger sizes on eBay, Depop and Etsy. Our guides to where to sell vintage and pricing your vintage cover fees and timing. Era context is in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s hubs.
