Most old band shirts sell for $40 to $500, a small number of original tour tees from the 1970s to early 1990s reach four figures, and modern reprints of the same graphics are worth only a few dollars. As of 2026, original tour tees commonly bring $200 to $500 on resale marketplaces, while the auction record for a vintage T-shirt is $17,640 (before fees) for a 1967 Grateful Dead shirt sold at Sotheby's. What separates the two ends is originality, the band and design, and the era, which you can usually check in a minute from the hem and the tag.

Quick answer

  • Ordinary vintage graphic tees: $10 to $40. Typical vintage band tees: about $40 to $800 on eBay, with most sales in the low hundreds.
  • Original tour tees (dates on the back) from the 1970s to early 1990s: commonly $200 to $500.
  • Metal, punk, grunge, alternative and 1990s rap shirts lead the market; widely printed acts sell lower.
  • Single-stitch hems and an era-correct tag are the first proof of age. Double-stitch and tagless labels usually mean a reprint.
  • Condition matters less than in other clothing: fading and print cracking are accepted; holes, stains and cut sleeves are not.
  • Records ($7,000 to $27,000) are rare outliers, not benchmarks.

Is it original? Check this before anything else

A reprint of a famous design is worth very little; the original can be worth hundreds or thousands, and across a room they can look the same. Dealers estimate an original period shirt outsells a modern reprint of the same graphic "by ten to a hundred times". Check:

  1. The hem. Turn the sleeve and bottom hems inside out. One row of stitching (single stitch) was the norm through the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s; manufacturers moved to double stitch in the mid-1990s and it was mostly standard by 2000. Single stitch does not prove value, but almost every valuable vintage tee has it.
  2. The tag. Period blanks include Screen Stars, Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, Anvil, Oneita, Sportswear and Champion. Merchandise-company tags (Brockum, Giant, Winterland) date many 1980s and 1990s shirts. A 50/50 cotton-polyester tag is common on 1970s and 1980s shirts.
  3. Made in USA. Most T-shirt production moved overseas through the late 1990s, so a Made in USA tag points to the vintage decades.
  4. The copyright line. A year printed in the graphic gives the earliest possible date, not proof of age, because reprints copy the date.

Our fake vintage band tee guide covers the reprint tells in detail, and dating by labels covers tag eras.

The pattern behind the table: bands with smaller print runs and cult followings (PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth) often outsell bigger acts whose merchandise was printed in huge numbers (The Cure). For your exact shirt, search check sold prices for vintage single stitch band tee on eBay and filter to sold listings, or try the band name with "single stitch" and the tour year.

Records and outliers

  • $17,640 ($19,300 with fees): a mango-yellow 1967 Grateful Dead shirt designed by Allan "Gut" Terk, sold at Sotheby's in October 2021 against a $6,000 to $8,000 estimate. The Hollywood Reporter describes it as the auction record for a vintage T-shirt.
  • $27,000 (claimed): a Bangkok vintage shop, Thunderstruck, said in July 2025 that a buyer paid this for a faded 1996 Nas "If I Ruled the World" shirt. This is a shop's claim, not an auction result.
  • $3,999 (asking): the dealer MNTGE listed a 1993 Nirvana "Heart-Shaped Box" shirt at this price. An asking price is not a sale.

Treat these as the ceiling, not a guide to your shirt.

How condition affects band tee prices

Band tees break the usual condition rules. Fading, a cracked print and thin, soft cotton are often part of what buyers pay for. What genuinely costs money:

  • Holes, especially in the print or collar.
  • Underarm and collar staining.
  • A stretched or replaced collar.
  • Alteration. Cut sleeves, cropped hems and cut necklines are permanent value loss.

For a rough guide to how grades translate into price, Cluzy applies these multipliers to its band tee baseline of $40 to $800: deadstock 1.3 to 1.8x, excellent 1.0 to 1.2x, very good 0.75 to 0.95x, good 0.5 to 0.7x, fair 0.25 to 0.4x. On a rare original, buyers will often accept fair condition. See our condition grading guide.

Size matters too: medium through extra large sell fastest.

Mistakes that destroy value

  • Washing hot or tumble drying, which shrinks the shirt and cracks or peels the print.
  • Ironing the graphic.
  • Bleaching or scrubbing stains, which usually damages the print and collar more than the stain.
  • Storing it folded on the print for years, which cracks the graphic along the fold.
  • Selling a box of shirts as a lot before checking each hem and tag.

Our stain and odor removal guide and storage guide cover safe handling.

Bootlegs: worth something or not?

A period bootleg, printed and sold outside the venue at the time, is still a vintage shirt, and in parts of the market (1990s rap especially) licensed and period bootleg shirts trade in the same bracket. The Hollywood Reporter's 2025 survey of the market highlights parking-lot bootlegs of Biggie and Tupac as hard-to-find pieces. What has almost no value is a modern reprint of an old graphic, licensed or not. Construction and the tag settle which one you have.

Where to sell

Rare originals sell best at eBay auction with clear photos of the front and back graphic, the collar tag and the inside of a hem, or to specialist band tee dealers. Mid-market shirts sell steadily on eBay, Depop and Etsy. Use measurements (pit to pit and length) rather than the tag size, because vintage sizing runs small (vintage sizing). See where to sell vintage and photograph and list vintage.
