Chanel is the Paris house of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (died 1971), founded on simple jersey clothes after the First World War and revived in 1954 with the cardigan suit. Because the house closed during the Second World War and changed designers in 1983, the era a style belongs to is a key check on any label.

Company history

The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) records that Chanel started as a milliner around 1908 and by the end of the First World War had a dressmaking business making jersey dresses and skirt-and-sweater sets. Her first true collection was presented in 1922. The house closed during the Second World War and Chanel staged a comeback in 1954 (our 1950s hub gives February 1954); her signature cardigan suit followed and she made it until her death in 1971. Karl Lagerfeld took over design in 1983, followed by Virginie Viard after his death in 2019 and Matthieu Blazy from December 2024.

The VFG also notes "adaptation" labels, used not by Chanel but by US firms making clothes adapted from her designs, which can be faithful or loose.
