Most vintage dresses sell for $40 to $300. Era sets the starting range (a confirmed 1950s dress typically brings $50 to $300, a 1970s dress $25 to $150), and label, condition and size decide where in that range it lands. A small group of makers sell for much more: Fortuny Delphos gowns typically bring $1,800 to $7,500 at auction, and couture by houses such as Lanvin, Galliano or early Dior can reach five or six figures. All prices here are estimates as of 2026, drawn from the sold data and auction results cited at the end.

Quick answer

  • 1950s dress: $50 to $300 typical; a flawed one under $50, a pristine labelled one $300 or more.
  • 1920s beaded silk dress: a few hundred dollars at regional auction, around $800 to $1,000+ retail for a good one; condition varies wildly.
  • Victorian and Edwardian dresses and bodices: often under $250 at regional auction; important or early pieces $1,800+.
  • Labels that lift prices: Ceil Chapman (about $150 to $325 at auction), Ossie Clark (about $150 to $440, best $1,600), Fortuny (about $1,800 to $7,500), Chanel, couture Dior, Galanos.
  • Labels that sell in volume but stay modest: Suzy Perette and Gunne Sax (typically $35 to $110 at auction).

Value by era

The reseller app Underpriced publishes a value table for vintage clothing by era, for pieces confirmed to that era in good condition. It is a useful baseline for dresses without a notable label.

Use these as a starting point, then adjust for label, condition and size. Our era hubs (1920s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s) explain how to confirm the decade, and date by labels and date by zippers help when there is no obvious label.

Value by label and maker

Auction figures are from Barnebys realized-price listings for each name, de-duplicated and limited to dresses where possible (read October 2026; mostly US regional auctions). Small samples, so treat as indicative.

Antique and early dresses

Pre-1920 clothing is the category where owners most often overestimate. At UK regional auctions, Victorian dresses and bodices commonly sell for about $33 to $370, most under about $250 (14 recent Barnebys results). Higher prices go to early, well-preserved or documented pieces:

  • An Antiques Roadshow appraiser valued a pair of late-1830s handmade dresses at $1,800 to $2,500 at auction (2014), despite visible moth damage.
  • Royal provenance moves prices into another league: items of Queen Victoria's clothing, including a bodice, sold for about £16,000 at auction (reported by the Daily Mail).

See our Victorian and Edwardian era guides, and reproduction vs antique before assuming a dress is period.

1920s beaded dresses

Beaded silk dresses from the mid-1920s are among the scarcest survivals of the century in excellent condition, because they were worn hard (the Vintage Fashion Guild points to all that Charleston dancing). Prices reflect condition more than anything:

Couture and museum-level outliers

These are not benchmarks, but they show where the ceiling is. At Kerry Taylor Auctions' Passion for Fashion sale reported in December 2025:

  • John Galliano "Clam" dress, spring-summer 1988: £156,000.
  • Jeanne Lanvin haute couture robe de style, autumn-winter 1926 to 1927: £32,500.
  • Josephine Baker embellished mesh stage costume, circa 1930: £28,600.
  • Patrick Kelly "Button Heart" wool jersey dress, autumn-winter 1986 to 1987: £22,100.

Celebrity provenance multiplies value: the dress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" sold at auction for $1,267,500 in 1999 and, per the denisebrain vintage blog, for $4.8 million in 2016. For consigning a piece like this, see auction houses for costume.

What moves a dress up or down

The Vintage Fashion Guild explains the spread with one example: three 1950s dresses from the same shop at $49 (pretty but flawed), $98 (simple, excellent condition) and $300 (pristine, good label, great design). The main drivers:

  • Condition. Underarm stains, shattered silk, moth holes and broken zips are the usual problems. See condition grading.
  • Label and design. A known designer or couture label, and a strong silhouette or print.
  • Fabric and construction. Silk, beading and hand finishing on older pieces; see identify fabrics and date by construction.
  • Size. Wearable sizes sell faster. Measure rather than trusting the tag (vintage sizing).
  • Scarcity. The VFG notes larger dress sizes and heavily worn categories survive in smaller numbers.
  • Provenance and story. A documented owner or event adds value.
  • Venue and seller. The same dress sells for more from an established dealer or in a major city shop than at a rural antique mall.

Selling a vintage dress

Ordinary 1950s to 1990s dresses sell well on Etsy, eBay and Depop with good measurements and photographs. Designer, couture, 1920s beaded and pre-1900 pieces are worth consigning to a specialist costume auction or dealer. Read where to sell vintage, pricing your vintage and photograph and list vintage. Do not wash or dry clean an old silk or beaded dress before sale; see clean vintage clothing.

All prices are estimates as of 2026 from the sources below. Auction figures are as reported by each source; some include buyer's premium and some do not.
