Christian Dior Labels: History and How to Date Them

Christian Dior (1905 to 1957) founded his Paris house in 1946 and changed fashion with the New Look in 1947. Dior licensed early and ran several ready-to-wear lines, so for dating and value the label line (couture, Boutique, New York, London or licensed) matters enormously.
Company history
The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) and our designer label fakes guide agree that Dior founded his house in 1946 with backing from Marcel Boussac and showed his first collection, the Corolle line dubbed the "New Look", in 1947 (our 1940s hub gives February 12, 1947). He licensed furs, perfumes and stockings in 1948, and Christian Dior New York opened in October 1948. Christian Dior Models Limited in London followed in 1952. New lines came each season, including the H-line (1954) and the A- and Y-lines (1955). After Dior's death the head designers were Yves Saint Laurent (1958 to 1960), Marc Bohan (1960 to 1989), Gianfranco Ferré (1989 to 1996), John Galliano (1996 to 2011), Bill Gaytten, Raf Simons and, from 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Label timeline
| Label or clue | Approximate dates | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Christian Dior couture, often dated by season and year with a stamped number | From 1946 | Couture, but numbers alone do not prove it |
| Licensed furs and stockings | From 1948 | Licensed, not the main line |
| Christian Dior New York | From October 1948 | Ready-to-wear; designed in Paris until 1961 |
| Christian Dior London | From 1952 | Ready-to-wear |
| Boutique labels | Various | Ready-to-wear; the VFG notes some also carry numbers |
| New York and London lines designed locally | After 1961 | Later ready-to-wear |
What it helps date
- The New Look shape dates from 1947 and dominated the 1950s; Dior's letter lines of 1954 and 1955 are covered in that hub.
- Licensing grew through the 1950s, so check the line before assuming couture: designer label fakes, what makes vintage valuable.
Values
Our vintage dress values guide shows the spread within one house: a 1960s Dior Boutique metallic cocktail dress made about $580, while a spring-summer 1958 couture dress sold for €96,000 at Maison Rossini in Paris (nss magazine), a record-level outlier. The hats and handbags values guide gives a vintage Dior bag median of $138 (Flipper Vintage). Prices are estimates as of 2026.
