Ceil Chapman Labels: History and How to Date Them

Ceil Chapman was a New York designer of cocktail and evening dresses whose business ran from 1940 into the 1960s. Her label changed in a few documented steps, so it can place a dress within about a decade, and a genuine label is one of the biggest value lifts among mid-century American dresses.
Company history
The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) records that Chapman went into business with her first husband, Samuel Chapman, in 1940, after a brief earlier venture with Gloria Vanderbilt that traded as Her Ladyship Gowns. She specialised in cocktail and formal eveningwear in silk, taffeta, jersey, chiffon, organdy and metallic brocade, and her dresses were sold through department stores and boutiques. Our 1950s guide notes that she patented numerous designs between 1954 and 1960 (citing Wikipedia).
The partnership with Samuel ended in the mid-1960s after financial difficulties. Afterwards she designed a younger line under the label "Ceil Chapman for Miss Winston". The VFG says she died in the late 1970s.

What it helps date
- A plain-name label with a full-skirted or draped cocktail silhouette fits the 1950s; the early "A Chapman Original" label belongs to the 1940s.
- The VFG notes her signature styles were often copied, so confirm a label with construction: see designer label fakes and date by zippers.
- For how her label fits the wider label system, see date by labels.
