James Galanos (1924 to 2016) ran a Los Angeles ready-to-wear house from 1951 until he retired in 1998, known for chiffon eveningwear finished to near-couture standards. The Vintage Fashion Guild documents three label versions with date ranges, which makes a Galanos label one of the more precise designer clues.
Company history
The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) records that Galanos spent nine years training and working before opening his house: a short time at the Traphagen School of Fashion from 1942, work at Hattie Carnegie, with Jean Louis at Columbia Pictures, an apprenticeship with Robert Piguet in Paris and a spell at Davidow in New York. Jean Louis encouraged him to start his own business, which he did in Los Angeles in 1951. He specialised in eveningwear, especially chiffon, and also made day suits and dresses. Nancy Reagan was a long-time client. He retired in 1998.
Label timeline
| Label or clue | Approximate dates | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| First Galanos label | 1951 to 1955 | His early years |
| Second label | 1954 to 1963 | Very like the third; the VFG notes the later one has slightly larger, thicker lettering |
| Third label | 1963 onward | Later work, to his 1998 retirement |
What it helps date
- Early labels place a dress in the 1950s; the third label means 1960s or later.
- Compare the lettering closely against dated examples, as the VFG advises, and check construction: designer label fakes.
Values
Our vintage dress values guide cites an Antiques Roadshow appraisal of a 1950s Galanos silk dress at $1,000 to $1,200 retail (2019), noting construction quality as the driver, and lists Galanos among labels that lift prices. Prices are estimates.
