Most vintage fur coats are worth far less than their owners hope: in recent auction and sold data, ordinary vintage mink coats mostly bring about $50 to $500, mink stoles $65 to $160, and Persian lamb coats under about $100. The coats that hold real value are rarer furs (sable), designer and couture pieces, and some non-fur outerwear: wartime A-2 flight jackets ($500 to $4,000, more with original paint), Schott Perfecto leather jackets, and named designers such as Bonnie Cashin. All figures below are estimates as of 2026.

Quick answer

  • Vintage mink coat: typically $50 to $500 at auction and on eBay; dealer guides quote up to about $800 to $1,000 for the best full-length coats.
  • Mink stole: about $65 to $160 typical at auction.
  • Persian lamb coat: about $30 to $110 typical.
  • Sable coat: median around $350 at auction, with exceptional coats above $2,000.
  • WWII A-2 flight jacket: $500 to $1,500 rough, $1,500 to $4,000 solid and original; painted and named jackets far higher.
  • Schott Perfecto leather jacket: median about $382, a clean one about $572.

Why fur values fell

Fur was once a store of value; it is not anymore. Changing attitudes toward animal fur have reduced demand on the secondary market, as both appraisal sites and furriers acknowledge, and many heirloom coats are now worth a small fraction of their original price. Legal changes add friction: California's AB 44 banned the sale and manufacture of new fur products from January 1, 2023. It explicitly exempts used fur products ("fur in any form that has been worn or used by an ultimate consumer"), so selling a vintage coat remains legal there, but sellers of exempt used fur must keep a record of each sale for at least a year. Sheepskin, shearling and leather are not covered by the ban.

What moves a fur up or down

  • Pelt condition. Soft, glossy fur with no bald patches, and a supple leather backing. Furriers say dry, brittle or cracked leather backing sharply reduces resale interest.
  • Length and cut. Full-length coats and wearable silhouettes sell better than boxy shoulders or cropped sleeves, which may need restyling.
  • Fur type and colour. Sable and chinchilla sit at the top; natural colours generally beat dyed; unusual mink colours (silver-blue, pastel) attract interest.
  • Label. Recognised furriers and department stores (Revillon, Maximilian, Blackglama, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue) help. FindA.Sale estimates designer or store labels add 20 to 50 percent over unmarked equivalents.
  • Odour and storage. Smoke, mildew or musty smells count against a coat; professionally stored and maintained coats grade best.

Outliers

1stDibs notes that vintage mink by major designers that no longer use fur (it names Versace, Chanel and Armani) can reach tens of thousands of dollars in good condition. These are dealer prices for designer pieces, not a benchmark for an unlabelled department-store mink.

Leather and wartime flight jackets

Military flight jackets are where vintage outerwear money really is. California Vintage Buyers' 2026 ranges:

An identified plain A-2 realised $5,547 at RR Auction. Original paint is also the detail most often faked, so painted jackets need expert examination. Search check sold prices for WWII A-2 flight jacket original on eBay.

Vintage cloth coats

Most mid-century wool coats sell in the low hundreds; the label decides the outliers.

Condition: what costs the most

  • Fur: dry or splitting skins, bald patches, torn or stained linings, odour. FindA.Sale estimates good condition keeps 80 to 90 percent of value, fair 50 to 75 percent, poor 20 to 50 percent.
  • Leather: cracking, dry rot and replaced knits or zips. On wartime jackets, replaced parts move a jacket into the "rough" bracket.
  • Wool: moth holes, especially on the front, and worn cuffs and collars.

Selling a fur or coat

  • Get a realistic number first. A coat bought for thousands decades ago will usually sell for a small fraction of that. FindA.Sale notes luxury consignment shops mark vintage furs up 50 to 100 percent over what they pay at estate sales, so expect a dealer offer well below shop prices.
  • Sell where buyers look. Common minks and fox sell through eBay, regional auctions and consignment; rare furs, couture and documented flight jackets justify specialist auction houses (see auction houses for costume).
  • Check the rules where you sell. Used fur is exempt from California's ban, but check each marketplace's own policy before listing.
  • Photograph the label, lining, skin side (if visible at a seam) and any wear. See photograph and list vintage.

All prices are estimates as of 2026, from the sources below. Fur prices vary sharply by region and season.
