Carhartt has made heavy-duty work clothes in Michigan since 1889. For collectors the logo is the main date clue: the railcar-and-heart logo marks the collectible era up to the early 1960s, and older blanket-lined coats and Detroit jackets sell well above later ones.

Company history

Wikipedia records that Hamilton Carhartt founded the company in Detroit in 1889 to make work clothing for manual labourers, starting with two sewing machines and five workers. Its early growth in the 1890s focused on railroad workers, and within 20 years it had facilities in eight other cities, including in the United Kingdom and Canada. It remains family owned. Carhartt Work in Progress (WIP), a European streetwear licence, dates from 1994.
