Gucci Labels: History and How to Date Them

Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 as a leather goods shop and became one of the best-known Italian luxury houses. Its signature designs appeared at known dates, so a style or logo gives a firm "no earlier than" date for a vintage Gucci piece.
Company history
Wikipedia records that Guccio Gucci opened his shop on Via della Vigna Nuova in Florence in 1921, selling imported leather luggage and goods made by local craftsmen. A Rome shop followed in 1938. The Bamboo bag, with bamboo handles, was launched in 1947 in response to post-war material shortages, and the Gucci loafer in 1952. In 1961 Gucci opened stores in London and Palm Beach and launched the bag later named after Jacqueline Kennedy. The double-G logo for belt buckles and other accessories was introduced in 1964, and the Flora scarf was designed in 1966. The Gucci family was ousted from the company by 1993.
