Yves Saint Laurent (1936 to 2008) opened his own couture house in 1962 after succeeding Christian Dior. His lines started at known dates, so the line name on the label (couture, Rive Gauche, Encore) is a quick test of whether a piece can be as old as claimed.

Company history

The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) records that Saint Laurent became head designer at Dior on Dior's death in 1957, with his Trapeze collection for spring 1958, and was later replaced there by Marc Bohan. He opened his own couture house in 1962 and established the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line in 1966. Key collections include Mondrian (1965), Le Smoking tuxedo suits (1967 onward), Safari suits (1968) and the Russian collection (1976). The Encore secondary line was introduced in 1993 for the US market. He retired in 2002 and the couture atelier closed; Rive Gauche continued under Tom Ford from 2000, then Stefano Pilati, and in 2012 the company became Saint Laurent Paris.
